Review of the Hunter 34 by Dan Belcher

Year built 1985
Location of boat Perry Lake, KS
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. Have only sailed it one season, but I love this boat.
Gear that's been added Deck cover, air/heat, TV/VCR, and other creature comforts.
Structural or complex improvements None.
The boat's best features So much boat for the money. I have looked at many different boats in this size range and have never quite figured out why the Hunter 34 is so economical to buy. Has great lines, incredible room below decks, sails like a dream, fast in light air (6-8 knots in 15 mph wind). I've owned quite a few smaller sail boats, but have never sailed a boat with this much comfort coupled with great performance and economy.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Faucets.
Sailing characterisitcs Great light wind boat. Again, very comfortable overnighting.
Motoring characterisitcs Motors great and uses very little gas.
Liveability Can't say enough good things about the liveability of this boat. So much room in a 34' boat.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Bought used from Hunter dealer in Huron, OH. They were great to deal with. If I ever buy a new Hunter, will try to buy through this dealer. Trucked the boat to K.C., MO. Dealer did a great job of preping the boat for transport.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Beware of brokers. Looked at 6 different 34's at several dealer/brokers. Almost all lied about the condition of the boats. Do not buy a boat sight unseen. Large N. Texas broker and broker S. of Detroit both grossly mistated the condition of boats they advertised. Wasted a lot of $ traveling to look at these boats. Found RCR Yachts in NY to be very reputable and the dealer in Huron, OH.
Other comments I believe the Hunter 34 is the most boat in terms of roomability and performance you can buy for the dollar. Perfect for family of 4. My next boat will probably be a Hunter 40 (Legend), if I can stand to part with the 34.
