Review of the Hunter 30_74-83 by Eric R. Schleif

Year built 1975
Location of boat Schooner Bay, VA.(Chesapeake Bay)
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in NJ.
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I'm always looking for something bigger.
Gear that's been added No.
Structural or complex improvements I had to replace the rudder after running aground on my first trip.
The boat's best features It's very roomy and comfortable for overnight sailing.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The mainsheet and traveler location prevent installation of a dodger over the companionway hatch. There is not enough storage access from the cockpit. The rudder and keel are the same length making rudder damage almost certain with even a minor grounding.
Sailing characterisitcs Some weather helm problems with higher winds but generally easy to sail.Definately not a performance oriented or blue water boat!
Motoring characterisitcs Very underpowered!
Liveability Very roomy and comfortable for it's size.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Not very helpful unless you want to buy a new boat.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments Good starter boat for couple or family on weekend trips.
