Review of the Hunter 30_88-94 by Robert Garlough

Year built 1991
Location of boat Muskegon, Michigan
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1997
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. It has been a great boat for my first yacht. Small enough to be able to solo and double, but large enough to handle the wind and waves of the Great Lakes. I look to move up to a 36-40 in about 4 years.
Gear that's been added Autohelm wind, auto pilot, and other electronics. CD player and speakers (Below and aft).
Structural or complex improvements Removed the alcohol stove and installed a microwave, dry goods shelf and cutting board surface.
The boat's best features Layout of the winches, location of the head, quality of joinery, woodwork and finish.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The head is too narrow. The electronics-circuit breaker/switch board too limited. Not enough room for expansion of future electronics.
Sailing characterisitcs Points okay into wind. Does better in heavier winds, than light.
Motoring characterisitcs Trouble in reverse. The boat walks strongly to starboard in reverse.
Liveability I've done weekend, 5 day and 10 trips by myself, a friend, couples (4 people). Too small for 2 couples beyond a weekend. Okay for two for 2 weeks. Quite liveable for solo for extended time.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) N/A. Other than the boat was dismasted 2 summers ago, and it took 7 months to get a replacement spar from Florida to Michigan.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any N/A
Other comments I would highly recommend it as a weekend cruiser.
