Review of the Hunter 34 by Jerry Pok

Year built 1986
Location of boat Manitowoc, Wi.
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? Yes
Owner bought the boat in 1986
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, definitely. WE go to the boat shows regularly and have not seen anything better.
Gear that's been added Refrigeration, cruising spinnaker, GPS, 150 Genoa, dinghy, dodger, awning, furling for the genoa, changed some shelving.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features This is the best Hunter ever. It has lot of living space, it is fast, handles easily, has many opening port and dorades for ventilation, the head is in the correct location( forward). The galley is good with two sinks, two burner stove with oven, large refrigerator. Sail handling is great with full traveler, four winches of good size to handle trimming.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. No problems in l6 years and 7000+miles of sailing except for a couple of port leaks which were easy to fix.
Sailing characterisitcs The boat almost sails itself. I can lock the wheel going to windward and the boat will track for almost a half hour. The only problem is sail ing down wind in large waves 6to 8 ft. The waves tend to throw the wide transom around.
Motoring characterisitcs No problem. Again I can lock the wheel and let the boat go. Of course the wave conditions can mess this up.
Liveability Great. For the two of us it is ideal. We live on the boat weekends and cruise for three to four weeks each year. We also have had five guests on board. This is doable but it is tight. The biggest problem with guests is where do you put all their luggage?
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Did not deal with Hunter.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Had a great experience with our dealer. Fox River Marina of Oshkosh, Wi. They are now out of business sad to say.
Other comments The l986 Hunter was a great boat. Hunter has never dupicated it.
