Review of the Hunter 450 by Douglas Stowell

Year built 2001
Location of boat Redondo Beach, CA
The boat is sailed on Open ocean
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? Yes
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? No. I have no problem with the 450, my entire problem has been with the dealer - H
Gear that's been added I have added Raytheon radar, chartplotter, and GPS.
Structural or complex improvements no
The boat's best features If I could sail her - it would be helpful to answer this. Right now the only good feature is the master stateroom.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The fridge does not cool completely and runs excessivly. The engine turbo locked up and broke. The sole was damaged on delivery. The TV died. The stero humms loudly and cuts off a volume. The water tanks were filled with cleaner on delivery and took 3 weeks to clear the smell out of water - repeated flushing was done frequently. One of the house banks did not charge due to a defective fuse. The forward head leaked constantly. The power to the compass was jamming the steering gear and shorted out. The steering post was not assembled properly and leaked water into the engine area. Teak peeled off the tops of the doors in the main stateroom. There were many other "little" things.
Sailing characterisitcs From the ONE sailing trip in 6 months - she handled well, and responded quickly. A little skitish on rough water.
Motoring characterisitcs you are kidding... lots of smoke...
Liveability Very livable - as that is all we are able to do with a broken engine.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I have yet to hear back from them.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any The broker should have their permit removed until they can service what they sell.
