Review of the Hunter 25_73-83 by JamesE. Buckley

Year built 1976
Location of boat .Patomac River
The boat is sailed on Rivers
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in Va.
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? For the price I paid yes. This is my first sail boat and I knew nothing about them when I bought it. I think The 25 Hunter is a good boat for the price.
Gear that's been added I have added rope halyards.I did away with the wire halyards.Had to add a radio.
Structural or complex improvements no
The boat's best features The older Hunters are a good solid boat for for its' price range. And I think the overall design of the older Hunters is a little better than other boats in its' size.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The large hatch that is trapezoid, and the large lip that the hatch fits over makes it hard to try a replacement for the hatch. THe cockpit is like most older boats, on a long days sail you need cushions. cockpit floor needs more drains. The boat sits stern up alittle and water does not run up hill. Drains are in the back cockpit floor. Two of them.
Sailing characterisitcs I am a new sailer, but I have had nothing but fun on my boat. From what I know it sails well.
Motoring characterisitcs Having a 9.9 hanging off the back, is low on the transom. makes it hard to operate the motor when you are tring to dock. backing up you have to lean over the tiller to operate the motor, when you do that the tiller will turn on you, the motor pushes water aganist the tiller and makes it turn one way or the other. You have to hold it or tie it off. Also in normal motoring, the more speed the more the motor goes into the water. You have to ajust for that if you plan to run at high speeds.
Liveability The only time you can stand up is when the cockpit hatch is open. There is alot of sleeping room.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I think for a 1976 25ft. boat, at the price it sold it at, they did a good job. I do like the new Hunters, I just can not swing the price right now.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments If you find a older Hunter, and again, at a good price, and it has been well maintained, its a great boat.
