Review of the Hunter 140 by Bobby McCullough

Year built 2000
Location of boat Mount Juliet, TN
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? I would probably opt for the larger 170. The 140 has been easy to learn on but after a year, I think I could have use just a bit more room.
Gear that's been added "Velcroed" the seat cushions down and an AM/FM cassette! Bath tub strips in the cockpit have worked wonders too.
Structural or complex improvements None other than running mast floats (small boat fenders) up with the sail. Replaced broken rudder and I believe the replacement is actually for a larger boat. I am not able to pull it out of the water with the line due to its width, but it wonderful for skulling!
The boat's best features Easy and quick to rig. Easy to put in and sail alone. Great for an evening with a couple of buddies and a few beers.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I sailed in Feb. on a warm day with a wet suit in much too much wind to be out alone. I furled the jib thinking I was depowering my boat. Instead I learned the fine art of flipping and turtling. I have since learned to NOT furl the jib in heavy wind and have added a mast float for anti-turtling.
Sailing characterisitcs Points well with the jib (remember, don't furl it!). Amazing in heavy wind...I was in over 30 knots and without the jib didn't tip/flip until a gust hit!
Motoring characterisitcs Paddle and skulling. The new rudder skulls quite nicely.
Liveability I'm willing to give it a try, not sure if the better half is up for it though. Use the mail over the boom as a shelter. It could be done.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I recently inquired about the "raceability" of my 140 via email. I was glad to learn that the boat was fine for racing, the captain was what needed assistance. My questions were VERY quickly answered and were very helpful.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I could have purchased via the internet, but I'm glad I went with a dealer. I got a lesson and my questions answered. If you don't need a lesson or have questions, buy one used.
Other comments I have loved the boat so far. I hope to let her see the ocean someday soon. For lake sailing, she has been perfect.
