Review of the Hunter 30_88-94 by bruce Keller

Year built 1992
Location of boat Casco Bay, Me
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes
Gear that's been added Boat has lots of fun stuff: Cockpit has shower, custom table, Navpod with Garmin chartplotter, cushions, custom pedestal cover; has charger, manual bilge pump, radar, loran; 135 fore and Doyle assymetrical. Other stuff was onboard including dodger...
Structural or complex improvements Simple boat really doesn't need this treatment
The boat's best features Solid in the open sea, easy single handed operation, low maintenance, doesn't slowly self destruct like newer boats
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Had a few problems with my 2GM yanmar. Counterweight in mast post for table is noisy in a rolling anchorage. Tanks a bit small.
Sailing characterisitcs Easy in all conditions including seas to 6', winds to 25 kts. Tacks well, nice and stiff adds to the "wellbeing" of guests
Motoring characterisitcs The 2GM has problems in a strong seaway or headwind...could use a bit more horsepower. We have a 2 blade to deal better with the high kelp content of the Maine coast.
Liveability Great for 2 adults a a couple of grandkids.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I have purchased replacement parts with success and have had technical help as needed, although seldom.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any A struggle, but I would not want to be in the business...
Other comments The 30T is still, if not more so, the best 30 foot boat built for overall value, liveability, and ease of handling. I just surveyed the current 2002 offerings from the major manufacturers at the boat shows.
