Structural or complex improvements Nothing structural, major project has been to take the keel down to bare metal and re-fair, refinish. Have also completely refinished the cabin, varnishing all surfaces, new upholstery, curtains, refinished headliners.
The boat's best features We feel this particular model is an exceptional value. I've been hard pressed to find more boat for the money anywhere. The accomodations work fine for two adults and a teenager. Performance is very good, and the boat is quite attractive looking from all angles.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I dislike the fact that interior cabnetry is installed over the floorboards with very minimal access to what's underneath. My major complaint is that any water below the flooring tends to get trapped in the gridwork of the boat structure rather than draining to the bilge. Deck leaks have proved a bit of a challenge although probably no more than with most boats of this age. Access to the batteries is poor, and I feel that too much weight is on the starboard side with the holding tank, water heater, batteries and fuel tank all on that side. I'd like to see better electrical accessability.
Sailing characterisitcs The boad performs well to weather in light air sailing with full main and a furling 155% genoa. We typically begin to reef at anything over 12 knots of wind rather than fight the helm. Reaching and broad reaching are a delight in most all conditions. The extreme sweep of the spreaders allows nice tight sheeting angles for sailing to weather but definately hinder downwind capabilities. A curising chute is essential on this boat for offwind sailing in anything under 10 knots true wind. Boat speed is very good under sail, proper reefing is essential to reduce weather helm at higher wind speeds.
Motoring characterisitcs We typically motor at 2800 rpm which gives about 6 knots in small seas which I find acceptable. The engine (Yanmar 3GM) is a delight! Our only problem has been a bout with fuel contamination which we cured by installing an inspection port in the fuel tank which allows access for cleaning the tank every few seasons. Biocide has helped.
Liveability Extraordinary given the size and cost of the boat. I like the traditional layout and we find the accomodaions quite liveable. At 6'3" I appreciate the headroom throughout the cabin, the V berth is a little tight at the feet but not a real issure for weekend liveabord comfort. The galley is very usable even underway. The head/shower are well laid out and very functional. Stowage is acceptable as is ventilation. The cockpit is quite comfortable even with a group and controll layout is fine for singlehaded sailing.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I've only had ocaission to deal with Hunter directly one time, they were responsive but unable to provide what I needed (replacement stancions damaged in a storm) as the item sought was no longer in production. Suitable replacements were offered at what I felt was a fair price.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any The boat was purchased through Anchor Marine in Sister Bay, WI. Our experience with them was refreshingly good compared to others I've dealt with.
Other comments I total we have been extremely pleased with this boat. I feel that the quality of construction and more traditional design and layout are functional and more attractive than most current models. Again, I can't imagine finding more boat for the money in terms of accomodation and performance.
