Review of the Hunter 410 by Ken Lewis

Year built 2000
Location of boat Atlantic Highlands, NJ
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Multi-week coastal cruising
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes - We were looking for a stable, easy-to-sail, comfortable boat in the 40 ft range. We are very pleased in all areas. The boat sails well and the interior is bright, liveable, with plenty of storage.
Gear that's been added Anchor windlass; inner forestay; Raytheon integrated radar, GPS, Autohelm, Chartplotter; vacuflush toilets; upgraded alternator; 150 ft. chain; spare anchor (danforth); additional VHF belowdecks;
Structural or complex improvements None to date; considering dink davits; wind generator
The boat's best features Sails well, points well. Easy to handle under sail and power, good around the docks. Excellent equipment. Roomy cockpit and transom walkthrough a big plus. Interior well laid out, bright and cheerful. Sleeps 4-8 with no problem. Pullman berth and forward head very nice. We use the forward head for showers a lot. Galley well equipped, easy to use in a seaway. Decks free of clutter.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. No problems with the boat other than initial debugging. Icebox could probably use better insulation and sealing around accesses.
Sailing characterisitcs Boat sails well. Points to 30 degrees, can pinch to slightly less. You'll need to tack downwind due to B&R rig, we find this no problem since the boat jibes easily and under control in 20 knots. Helm is responsive, boat steers well using autopilot when sail plan is balanced.
Motoring characterisitcs Our Hunter 410 has a standard 2 bladed prop. Our dealer (Sandy Hook Yacht Sales) recommended we start with standard prop. Boat motors well, easily at 6 knots with higher speed available. We transit the East River in NYC frequently and have never felt any lack of punch. Reverses well with only minor prop walk. Very easy to handle in marinas or around the docks.
Liveability We have always liked the boat's interior. It is bright and cheerful, even on gloomy days we have lots of natural light below. Layout is very nice for us (we have the 2 cabin version), galley is very adequate. Owner's cabin aft has plenty of storage, ventilation is very good. We will probably install some reading lights which are closer to the headboard. Accessibility to the aft head is easy and private. Forward accomodations are wonderful, all our guests like the privacy and the pullman berth is good sized even for our taller friends. Two storage trays below the pullman berth are wonderful for charts and related publications that you want to keep flat. Boat has very good storage under the floor near the galley for the bulky stuff, and one makes a great tool storage area. Lots of storage all over the boat, although some of it is a little tough to reach (eg, under the master stateroom mattress on the starboard side, but you can't have it all).
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) We have not needed to do this yet.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Sandy Hook Yacht Sales is our dealer. They have always been responsive to our needs. Immediately following commissioning our Ratheon radar failed. The problem was the dome which they diagnosed and replaced within days. We bought our prior boat from the same dealer with excellent experiences then. They are also helpful with the many questions we have asked.
Other comments The anchor locker is very large and the option to have it divided would be very nice (in fact, could be standard). Cockpit tends to collect water puddle on leward side in rain and you will end up walking through it. Would prefer more secure lazarette closures, rubber snaps don't do it for me. Stern cleats hide behind the arch anchor points and can be difficult to reach in a hurry. Overall quality has been very good to excellent. Rub rails a big plus. Sails like a bandit once you learn new trimming. Cockpit is so roomy that we have entertained a cramped 20 people on several of our Yacht Club trips. We love our Hunter 410.
