Review of the Hunter 410 by Jim Knack

Year built 2001
Location of boat Lake Michigan
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. I have no major complaints with this boat. It is very liveable, easy to sail, and has many features that I wasn't aware of until I started sailing and living aboard. I don't think any boat of this size offers more value
Gear that's been added Yes. Additional propane tank, winter cover , additional hand-rails. Also full electronics, dodger, bimini, Maxi-Prop, vacu-flush heads, furling main
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features This boat continues to impress me. My previous boat was an S2 which was very well built and fast. While some of the construction details on the Hunter are probably less expensive than on the S2, they are perfectly adequate and show the value of a high production company that can learn from any short-comings and design the boat to function well with less expensive solutions. I've had many visitors remark that they didn't know Hunter built such a nice boat.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Head floors need non-skid. Wife seriously cut herself slipping while we were docked. Helmsman seat needs better latch. I solved problem with Perko over-head latch Refrigerator and freezer needs better insulation at doors. Refrigerator shelf is designed to break when lid is shut if there is anything on left edge of shelf
Sailing characterisitcs I have a furling main and I've been a little disappointed in light wind sailing. However in 15-25 knots the boat has been dry, fast, and very comfortable. I think it points quite well and it is very easy to sail
Motoring characterisitcs This is a powerful boat, and very responsive. Interestingly, I experienced a drop from 8.6k at the beginning of the season (top speed) to 7.6 at the end when the bottom had a mossy feel to it and I had a few zebra muscles under the keel where the dealer had not painted
Liveability Excellent. This is home to my wife and I for 4-5 days a week throughout the summer. The galley is short on storage but the lockers in the cabins have enough to meet some galley needs while handling the necessary clothes storage. The second head is appreciated both when we use it as our own individual head and a god-send when we are having overnight guests. I have also been very pleased with the vacu-flush heads which I would not have ordered but they came on the boat. They use very little water and the pump-out folks always mention how clean our tanks are
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Hunter has been very good. There staff is knowledgeable and responsive. I have one remaining problem they are working on but I have confidence they will come up with something
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Their staff has been very pleasant. I think their attention to my concerns has been OK but not overwhelming in responsiveness. Again , I think they will solve my issues but it takes some perserverance
Other comments The worst thing about Hunter is the bias some people have about them. It is ill-founded. They make a good product and they are very good people to deal with! My enthusiasm has already helped them sell another 410
