Review of the Hunter 28.5 by Paul Fiorella

Year built 1985
Location of boat St Johns River, Jacksonville, FL
The boat is sailed on Rivers
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, probably but I have only had it for a few months. Maybe a bigger boat is in the offing.
Gear that's been added Except for a few new lines and a clean-up nothing has been added.
Structural or complex improvements No, the boat seems to be structural sound except the fore deck is a bit springy, however I don't believe it is delaminated, just a Hunter thing I guess?
The boat's best features Well certainly the layout of this boat is very popular with a nice serviceable quarter berth, descent access to the engine compartment and adequate accomondations all around, remember its only a 28.5. But undoubtly it is one of the biggests boats, (interior space)for its lenght.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The previous owner did have a problem with the rudder post tube, it actually broke away from the transom resulting in the quadrant pulling forward releasing the wire rope from its pulleys, she had to use the emergency tiller to get here home.
Sailing characterisitcs So far light conditions, but I sailed her before I bought her many times. Most of the sailing in the St Johns River is what I call wind (when we have it, usually fall, winter and spring)and no waves. You can actually have 20 knots of wind and virtually no waves (less than two feet).
Motoring characterisitcs Seems to motor quite nicely, especially when the prop and shaft are clean. It backs quite reasonably as well.
Liveability Not bad for two.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) No I have not dealt directly with them.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought the boat from the owner directly.
