Review of the Hunter 34 by Gene Mohr

Year built 1985
Location of boat Clark Hill Lake
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? In a heart beat. I was very fortunate... I wanted and 31...but my wife wanted a 34... so who's to argue with a woman who wants a bigger boat. Great value for the amount of room and the quality.
Gear that's been added GPS, CD player, Pedestal guard, Bimini. Soon to add a 150 genoa and a light air main sail.
Structural or complex improvements Extended bimini frame out to the stern rails. Adding a dodger frame. Raised the pedestal guard to be above the top of the wheel.
The boat's best features Room below. This boat feels like a home inside. Fast. She is great in light air.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. anchor plate.
Sailing characterisitcs A little tender in gusts above 15knts. Boat prefers to heal between 15 and 17 degrees...
Motoring characterisitcs Motor is strong and reliable. Fuel consumption is outstanding. We filled our tank last year at the beginning of the season and we still have almost half a tank now and that was spending 45days on the boat last year and 20 this year. Estimate of 1gal/1.5hours. 3 bladed prop makes a world of difference. 2800rpms=6.1knts.
Liveability Other than lack of storage space the boat is very comfortable for a 2-3 weeks of cruising. We were able to get everything onboard that we needed for a week but will be making modifications to increase the storage layout over the next couple of years. Galley is laid out very well.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Called them once and they were very helpful.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any n/a
Other comments Get a good survey from someone who knows Hunter Sailboats. I would not sell my boat for twice what I paid for her...ok..well maybe twice what I paid, but you will be hard put to find the boat with this kind of quality for less than twice as much.
