Review of the Hunter 23 by bill hinz

Year built 1987
Location of boat Clarks Hill Reservoir, Augusta GA
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard?
Owner bought the boat in 1988
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? yes
Gear that's been added swim ladder, compass, stereo/WB, rewired boat and upgraded fuse panel added extra lighting, solar vent fans
Structural or complex improvements none needed to date
The boat's best features simplicity and durability, good looks and clean lines, ease of use, good space for a 23, great storage
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. mast is pure hell to raise and lower, plastic through hulls won't last long-keep an eye on 'em, motor bracket looks weak, too much teak - looks good but tough to maintain USE CETOL SATIN - IT WORKS! gelcoat on topside is less than great, chronic cabin leaks - use tent shaped sunbrella draped over boom to keep out the water.
Sailing characterisitcs Good in light winds, tender in winds over 15-18, downright scary at 25. This boat could probably use a heavier, deeper keel but that would make trailering more challenging - a trade off I guess. Boat does not point well, but probably characteristic for this class of boat.
Motoring characterisitcs 5 hp Nissan is mounted well aft - hard to get to but out of earshot. The boat could use an 8, but dont think the transom could handle it. Line motor hood with thin foil backed insulation - quiets down lil' stinky even more.
Liveability the large sleeping area created by using the floorboards and seat backs is a innovative feature of this boat, even at that - 2 days max. the fact that the boat has no floatation keeps me up at night.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I have had support directly from Hunter in several cases over the 12 years I have owned this boat. There are no local dealers. Hunter has always been responsive, with reasonably priced replacement parts. I have had a great experience with them.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
