Review of the Hunter 34 by Bianca Brooks

Year built 1983
Location of boat Slidell, LA
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, in fact we did... this is our 2nd H34
Gear that's been added Not yet... plan to replace cushions and all running rigging. Will need new sails in the next couple of years. Plan to add another battery, replace water heater and remodel interior cabinetry (husband is wood worker) Also would like to add a genset
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features Space! Love how comfortable and open the interior is. It's amazing how much stuff will fit into this boat.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Leaky ports...we've replaced gaskets but will need to replace most of the ports themselves because of cracked plastic and broken knobs. Had to replace gate valve to head intake, it broke off during our first trip out, was completely corroded. All thru hulls are now bronze seacocks. Prior owner replaced teak sole in galley- rotted because of bad icebox drainage- added a drain hose that goes directly to bilge to alleviate the problem. Also had to replace valve on kerosene tank to stove, was a bit difficult as we had to drill out some of the surrounding cabinet to get the valve unscrewed.
Sailing characterisitcs Handles well but needs to be reefed early. Sails fast!
Motoring characterisitcs
Liveability Very comfortable on weekends and extended cruises. I could live on this boat if I had a bit more closet space :)
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any We only have the highest recommendations for Murray Yacht Sales (Stanton in New Orleans, LA and John Hans in Gulfport, MS) ... these guys are the best, this is the 4th boat we've purchased thru them.
Other comments This is our 4th boat, 3rd Hunter and 2nd H34. This time we looked at many different models and sizes before making our decision because this one will have to last until retirement and the "big" one that will replace it at that time. It's alot of boat for the price and well worth it.
