Review of the Hunter 36 by John

Year built 2006
Location of boat Brownsville, WA
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2006
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Definitely, but we would insist on better toilet.
Gear that's been added Raymarine C80 chartplotter/GPS, autopilot, radar, Max-prop 3-blade feathering prop, Ultra leather interior, refrig, separate freezer, dodger/bimini/connector, furling jib, furling mast, folding wheel, heater, stereo/CD.
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features Boat speed and ease of operation. Aft end setup allows easy aft boarding - tons better than the aft end of the Cataline 320 we had previously. Huge laserette, dish combination drying/storage area,
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Toilet is absolutely bottom of the line Head-Mate (I would have insisted on an upgrade to the Raitan PHEII if I'd known) - operation takes way too many pumps. Speed readout quit due to sea growth around speed paddle after only 8 months, and depth quit reading around the same time -- brochure says thru-hull fittings are bronze, but the speed and depth thru-hulls are plastic. Gel coat problem at delivery - commissioning company (CSR) took care of. Battery charger failed during delivery - replaced.
Sailing characterisitcs Pretty good speed under sail -- SA/Disp with furling mast main sail is 19.84. However, we were outrun by a smaller Hunter 335 and shouldn't have been, I don't think.
Motoring characterisitcs Great motoring speed - we got 7.4 kts @ 3100 rpm.
Liveability Excellent, except awful toilet.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Customer Service has been friendly but slow in responding. They took forever to answer a question about advertised sail area/displacement ratio.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Signature Yachts in Seattle, WA, has been awesome. One just couldn't possibly have a better sales rep than Tori Parrot. She's gone way beyond the call of duty, including going with us 5 times through the Ballard Locks from Puget Sound to Lake Union.
Other comments Cheap toilet. Plastic hull-thru for speed and depth.
