Review of the Hunter 30_74-83 by James Broughton

Year built 1982
Location of boat Chicago, IL
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2006
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. No regrets.
Gear that's been added VHF, stereo, self tailing winches, rigid boom vang.
Structural or complex improvements No.
The boat's best features Classic design, fast, well built and seaworthy, yet affordable. Large enough to be comfortable, but small enough to handle solo.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Nothing serious.
Sailing characterisitcs Sails beautifully. Does well in all conditions that I have encountered so far, faster than the Catalina 30, points to weather surprisingly well.
Motoring characterisitcs Does 6 knots in waves up to two or three feet with the 13hp Yanmar 2GM diesel. Wicked prop walk to port in reverse, but I've learned when I can use it to advantage and when it will work against me.
Liveability Comfortable for one or two people, decent storage, 6'-2" headroom all the way forward into the v-berth. Great ventilation with nine operable port lites and two hatches.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Have not dealt with Hunter.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought from previous owner.
Other comments Love the boat.
