Review of the Hunter 30_74-83 by Bill Keller

If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? My jury is still out, as I decided by necessity to refurbish the entire boat. There was a teenager  
Gear that's been added So far, I've replaced the VHF, the stereo, added a knotmeter, removed the loran, have a GPS. I plan on replacing the alcohol stove with propane, and to recover the cushions. I've added some safety gear, have a new fully battened main on order (the original was postage stamp sized), will have a new sail cover and will replace the bimini. I've added new batteries and a charger as the old one got fried. I also plan on unstepping the mast, run new halyards, a new coaxial radio line, replace the sheaves, and run all lines aft to the cockpit, relocating both mast mounted winches to the cabin top with line stops.  
Structural or complex improvements Rain was entering the boat everywhere. I replaced all portholes (duplicates were obtained from Gray Enterprises, now Bomar), re-bedded the chain plates, and through bolts in the toe-rail. Removed the rust from the infamous structual beam and coated it in epoxy. Routed the bottom of the bulkhead between salon  
The boat's best features I'm impressed with its solid construction, particularly having all chain plates (lowers) tied into mountings which are laminated to hull. I also like the spaciosness down below, seems like more than some older 35 footers. As far as cruising goes, I like a skeg for rudder protection.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I,ve not used the Hunter much as the past year has been devoted to restoration. The only thing I can,t stand is I keep hitting my head on the heder which spans in the salon doorway, and I'm not that tall.  
Sailing characterisitcs Not many experiences due to restoration, but am looking forward to some.  
Motoring characterisitcs No one seems to have any good to say about reverse, so I pull in bow first, as my mooring is in the crook of an L turn on a bayou.  
Liveability Seems to have a lot of space for a 30 footer
