SINGLE HANDED MAST STEP

posted 10-07-2008 by John Sylvester

One end attached to jib halyard. Boom vang attaches to connection for jib foot

Attachment to bow

This supports the mast while raising/lowering. Each side consists of 2 legs of beided cable each 21 inches long swedge to an O ring on one end and quick release at other. Legs and O ring is connected to mast 6 ft braided cable. One leg is attached to shroud attachment and other leg is attached to base of rail fwd. SUPPORTS WILL BE SLIGHTLY LOOSE WHEN MAST IS RAISED - YOU DONT WANT IT TIGHT.

Mast support

Mast support connected to mast with a quick release. Other end is swedge to O ring - THERE IS ONE PER SIDE

Mast support

Fulcrum is attached to mast using two 3 inch U bolds. Talked to Hunter and did not recommend direct mounting to mast like later models without serious reinforcement of mast. This was the best compromise.

Fulcrum

One hand controls the 9 foot pole and other hand release the line on the boom vang. The vang stop is at the top (pole end). This allows me to have full control while standing to control descent of mast.

Lowering the Mast

Mast resting down. This system is safe and simple. Idea came, with a few modifications, from catalina27.org.
