Reefing a H216

posted 10-07-2008 by Jeff Prideaux

My Hunter manual doesnt say how to reef the mainsail. The following pictures show how to do it.

This shows that the reefed sail doesnt go all the way to the top of the mast.

shortened sail

This shows how to reef at the mast. The main halyard was loosened to let down the sail a bit and then tied back off. The yellow line is the reef line.

lines at the mast

The blue line is the reef line. It is tied off on the mast, goes through the eye-hole on the sail and back down to the block on the other side of the mast.

bitter end of the boom

This shows the blue reef line going through the block and continuing on down the boom back towards the mast.

Other side of bitter end of boom

This shows where you tie off the blue reef line.

I leave the yelloe and blue reef lines attached all the time so it is easy to reef and shake the reef out.
