Cover for bow opening from O.E. below deck furler

posted 11-10-2013 by Eianm

My H42 came with the original equipment below deck endless line Hood seafurl furler. I finally got sick of the slipping sheet , so did an upgrade to the latest furlex- awesome change- very happy! BUT, I was left with a large hole in the deck , right at the bow, ahead of the anchor chain locker. So , was worried that in a big sea, taking waves over the bow, i would have been at risk of adding a lot of water and weight to my bow- not a good thing. I struggled with complex SS sheet metal designs, but they were all complicated, hard to make and expensive to have made. Got talking to my canvas guy ( really great at his profession!) and came up with this design. He used special snap clips that only open in one direction, so if we do take a wave, the water load on the vinyl is opposite to the clips release direction. It is simple to remove to anchor and in fact , I only leave it in place when docked or at sea. He used a very heavy duty vinyl and came up with a simple design that has under /over flaps to accommodate the exit of the chain. Happy to supply a drawing of his design if anyone is interested.
