Three Blade Fixed Prop

posted 11-16-2014 by Terry Cox 11/2014

Our 1991 P42 came equipped with an 18x15 fixed three blade RH prop and am very pleased with its performance. It will cruise all day long at 1,800 RPM pushing the boat to seven knots. The 4JH2-TE at that RPM burns about one gallon/hr. I normally keep it in neutral while under sail letting the prop spin freely.

One procedure that I have found quite effective in turning the boat on a dime in tight quarters. First turn the wheel hard over to starboard. Give a brief high throttle in forward gear. This will push the boats stern to port. Leave the wheel hard over to starboard and give a brief high throttle in reverse. The prop wash will push the stern to port. Repeat until the boat is pointing in the direction you want to go.
