Our 1991 P42 came equipped with one 12v socket and that was at the nav station. Always came in handy for those appliances that required 12v service; charging hand held VHF, spot lights cell phone, etc. I did install a 12v socket at the helm shortly after taking possession in 2002. It comes in handy for those small devices that need charging while underway.

Today, however, there is much more to offer; electric tooth brush, laptop, iPod, iPad, etc. To make things more convenient for the crew and visitors I decided to install more of these 12v sockets. I wanted something that blended in and was functional.

The first thing I did was to make a mounting flange out of teak. Something that was easy to mount the 12v socket as well as mounting on the bulkhead.

Just a different angel photo of the assembly. This particular device will light your cigarette (I do not smoke) but also has a built in map light. Purchased at our local thrift store for a buck.

This photo shows the 12v socket that I installed in our aft cabin. The black appliance is an inverter that I use to charge electric tooth brushes as well as operate the laptop.

A bit dark, but the photo shows a 12v socket in the forward cabin that guests can use to operate their assortment of appliances.

I added a 12v socket in our main cabin that I use mostly for playing iPod music through two computer speakers. It also has a USB port for charging other devices.

The 12v socket in the above photos I plan to install in the aft head next to the existing 120v outlet. Again, just for those type appliances that use a 12v type socket. I suppose I could use our inverter to do all these things, but it is far more energy efficient to connect these small appliances that require 12v to operate directly from the source.
