Replacing the H35.5 Holding Tank

posted 10-07-2008 by Jim Rushing

This is the original 13 gallon aluminum holding tank with an opening cut in the aft bulkhead. The cutting of this aft bulkhead is covered in H35.5 Aft Bulkhead Opening project. It is a previous photo story.

Original Holding Tank

Once the old holding tank and hoses are removed, this is what you see. The large black hose on the left side is the exhaust hose from the engine. The rudder post is also visible in the back.

Holding Tank Area

The small black hoses in the background are the two fuel hoses from the fuel tank and wiring running to the propane tank. It will be necessary to build a shelf in this area to support the new tank. The shelf will be a piece of plywood that is 23 inches by 24 inches. It will be raised enough to clear the fuel hoses where they come through the base area. This is about 1 inch. This is necessary because the depth of the tank is 23 inches and the existing shelf is about 18 inches.

Holding Tank Area

This is the new tank installed. It is a Ronco B250, which holds 25 gallons. The tank dimensions are 12 high, 23 deep, and 23 1/2 wide. The tank is held in place by strips of wood fastened around the plywood base and two wood stringers across the top. The stringers are fastened to the floor of the locker above the holding tank. Even if you roll the boat, the tank will not move. Note on the end of the tank is the sending unit for a Snake River Gauge.
