New sole - 82 Hunter 33

posted 10-07-2008 by Jeff Sherman

With the veneer pealing and wood flaking off,
I needed to replace as there was no refinishing
this floor...it was too far gone

Original flooring

The bilge cover had been under water prior to my
ownership, and the screws had pulled out of the T-bar support railing that held it in place. The
aluminum t-bar was also scratched, grooved, and
generally beaten up. I felt a new one had to be fabricated.

Bilge cover was falling out of its T-bar.

This step required much procrastination, as I did
not know what to expect under the wood. After
numerous opinions from a variety of individuals
I finally just went at it.

Removing the old flooring.

This piece was the most difficult to remove as it
had the greatest bend and therefore the highest
concentration of adhesive.

Starboard side in front of head.

Also a double type of bend. Front to back as
well as side to side. You can see the original seam line in front of the companion way.

Galley space.

Tools used.

Because of the double bends of the galley section
and in front of the head, I scored the back of the flooring to facilitate the bending.

Scoring the back.

I also pre-bent each piece that needed it. This
was done after 3-4 coats of urethene on the top side. The back was soaked down with a wet sponge and then forcibly held in position for at least
4-5 days.

Pre-bending

Because the pieces had already a number of coats
of urethene on them, and would be under a fair amount of pressure from the support pieces, I used wax paper so that the wood pieces under the supports would not stick to the painted surfaces.

Wax paper for no stick.

Two seperate pieces seen here, fitted together
almost seamlessly.

Finished gallery area.

New aluminum t-bar, new bilge cover, and again
two pieces of flooring. One piece may have fit through the companion way, but a screw up in cutting, meant another two pieces sectioned together side by side. Nine coats of urethene
(Interlux Goldspar Clear).

Main salon area.
