Forward Cockpit Drain H-33

posted 10-07-2008 by David Underwood

Recently, I have had some interest in the drain I added to the cockpit of my Hunter 33. This image shows the S.S drain plate which was purchased at West Marine for about $4.00, screwed down to the top edges of the fiberglass drain which you will be able to view in the next photograph.

The drain was made from fiberglass cloth, matte and roven all rolled around a cardboard tube of the proper size. I used wax paper around the cardboard tube before beginning the process to make a smooth interior drain surface and for the easy release of the fiberglass tube. (be sure to allow for 1/4 inch layup of the fiberglass materials) After the straight tube had cured fully, I cut it into three different pieces with different angles so that when turned and put back together it formed the L shape needed. Then, glassed together with additional layup to make the form strong and water proof. Still works great going on almost a year now.

The white hose is secured by two clamps which hold the hose in place on the self made fiberglass drain. Note the fiberglass ring at the top of this drain, it provides more surface area to provide a stronger water proof seal. The white hose is the same diameter inside as the head pumpout fitting which is what I decided to use for my thur hull connection... others may want to use another fitting like the sink discharge fitting in the head.
