H260 Autohelm/GPS Installed

posted 10-07-2008 by Bob Fliegel

See Before - Everything in my backpack!

Objective was to have everything portable. I did not want to worry about theft or damage from the salt air and some of the units - like the GPS - I use for other applications like camping or hiking.

See After - Approximately 2 minutes later

Note cockpit mounts for wires. Lower wire mount came with the Raytheon ST1000 Autohelm. Upper mount for the Garmin 76 GPS wire is the plastic bottle neck of a Poweraide bottle glued in place with 3M 5200.

For the tiller extension I used an oak dowel 1 3/8. The dowel was approximately 10 and cut in half - but cut at a very steep angle. One piece was permantly mounted to the tiller extension piece I cut off, with the angled (or beveled) end sticking out. The other piece I permantly mounted (3M 5200) inside the lower half of the tiller. The extension can only be inserted in that one position. The fit is very tight and I must keep the wooden dowel waxed or it will not insert all the way.
