Articulating Bow Sprit for Spinnaker

posted 09-12-2008 by Jeff Peltier

My goal was to sail deeper on a broad reach with an assimetrical spinnaker. Note the snap shackle to fasten to the bow eye and a pin to the custom bracket on the bow pulpit.

Side View of articluating bow sprit This is the top view with the wings extended to make it easier to return from full deflection.

Top view Powercleats were used to move the sprit from side to side. The Tack line is wrapped around the cleat and the Furling line is also on a powercleat. The Spinnaker halyard is on the inside clutch. All this makes it easier for shorthanded mark roundings as its often just 2 of us when were racing.

Controls This is how the control lines were routed to allow controlls in one location for easier use.

Control lines and blocks Here the sprit is pulled to windward on a starboard tack.

Starboard Tac This is on a port tack. We usually drop to windward right before the mark so it can be gathered and stowed while sailing upwind.

Port Tack Here were saling it wing on wing with a wisker pole to assist. In this particular case it worked well, as we closed 200 yards on boats with faster ratings than ours.
