Review of the Hunter 37.5 by Stuart Hochron

If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely. Having owned Ericson and C  
Gear that's been added Cruising Spinnaker a must for light air. The boat performs well upwind and on beam reach, but is rather slow in light air downwind (what boat isn't?). The addition of the cruising spinnaker with sleeve made downwind to close reach in light air the best sail! Wow does she move! Added GPS, Wind instruments, but not much more.  
Structural or complex improvements None needed so far. Should add more battery backup as only two available now. The plastic latches for all of the cabonetry is a pain as they break frequently and need replacement (an easy task). Replaced several stantions as they were eating away at the lifelines. Stantions are filled with a white plastic and should be stronger for safety. Added Maxprop three blade which was terrific for performance. Hull speed at 2500 RPM easily achieved. Backs straight. Stops on a dime. Upwind unreal.  
The boat's best features Can't beat the room, comfort.  
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Stantions too weak and tear through lifelines, which have been replaced. Plastic catches for cabinetry too flimsy. Would probably open in heavy sea. Canvas sail cover and bimini could have been made stronger/of better material...will probably need replacement in next two years. Otherwise functions extermely well.  
Sailing characterisitcs See above. A bit light in a heavy beat to windward. Rapidly accelerates in light air. Powers great under cruising spinnaker. Excellent maneuverability at dock.  
Motoring characterisitcs See above. All improved with three blade Maxprop. A bit noisy as engine compartment poorly insulated. Uses about 1.1 gallons per hour at 3200 RPM.  
Liveability Very comfortable. The seating around the salon table is a bit hard to get into from all sides however. Roomy V-birth and aft cabin. Hot shower below and out in cockpit is wonderful. So is walk through stern. Ditto aft seating. Needs some ventilation below when closed up. Really IS air tight.  
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) So far, so good. They answer promptly and forward whatever I've needed. Friendly and helpful.  
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought from J.P. Marzullo (JPYACHT@aol.com) in Maryland. He's a great guy. Unbeatable deal thanks to him. No balogna. I've kept in touch with him for the past two seasons. Recomend him highly. Office is in Annapolis.
