Review of the Hunter 37.5 by Joe Wienecke

Year built 1965
Location of boat Winthrop Harbor IL
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2005
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, the boat offers a lot of room for the money. I also like the size with 5 in the family we need the room below decks. The boat is easy to sail single handed but most of the time we have two or three on board.
Gear that's been added I put a new water heater with bypass kit in place. I plan to move the instruments to the helm next spring, I also need to have the Hood furling system bearings re-done the system is not working very well.
Structural or complex improvements Not yet I think the reefing system needs to be worked on and the main sail track needs cars teh main is very big and a bear to host. I also need to add a second halyard for a gale sail over the roller furled genny the genny at below 70% dosen't work very well.
The boat's best features The below deck room, swim platform, solar panel (it still works, pretty easy to sail once the sails are up.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Hood furling system is not very good I do not like the below deck set up. There is a small opening in the floor by the stove I stepped on the other day and my foot went right thru so I need to fix that not sure why it is there.
Sailing characterisitcs Sails fast when flat have been out twice in 25 to 30 knot winds 6 to 8 foot waves the boat has handled fine but is faster when flater so reef early. You need a storm or gale sail to help when winds get up over 25 knots. I have the 4'10" draft so I don't point great. I have been up over hual speed several times now I think this boat would make a good racer maybe next year.
Motoring characterisitcs Good power a lot of vibration I may need to have the shaft alignment looked at. You have great access to the motor front, back and on both sides.
Liveability Very room I have a 6'3" sixteen year old boy, 13 and 12 year on boys, my wife and me with plenty of room to stare. I do like the new rail seats on the new models I may have to add this later. We have stove, microwave, frige, A/C, CD player and TV so its is like a floating condo.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I have dealt with Racine Riverside Marina they are a Hunter dealer and have been nice to work with.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Good
