Review of the Hunter 37.5 by Peter Siemens

Year built 1987
Location of boat Lake of the Woods, Ontario
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength less than 10 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely. Other than some deck gelcoat problems Hunter seems to have had this is likely the best all around boat in the harbor.
Gear that's been added Espar furnace, whisker pull, rigid vang, reefing system to replace in boom system that did not work, dutchman furling system that did not work with a lazy jack system, line cleats.
Structural or complex improvements
The boat's best features The blend of pace and grace. The boat is beamy but points well, and sails well under all conditions. The interior cabin space is incredible. The quality of fit and finish is excellent even after almost 20 summers of being in the water.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The gelcoat on the deck has a lot of crazing and some parts are beginning to seperate. We would appreciate knowing what is causing this so that it will not reappear after repairing. The gelcoat generally is not as durable as one would expect. The dutchment flaking system was not a good idea. The in-boom furling system did not work. The metal gray water holding tank makes it impossible to know when it needs to be pumped out so we are forever pumping out every chance we get.
Sailing characterisitcs Excellent handling boat in all, and especially adverse, weather conditions.
Motoring characterisitcs Winds of up to 35 knots per hour make it extremely difficult not to miss our slip but so far we always managed. The weight and shape of the keel make this boat a pleasure to take out in all weather. We struggle with the height of the boom as it does not really allow for a cockpit enclosure.
Liveability Liveability is very good with the only minor complaint being the lack of headroom in the aft cabin. The balance of the cabin is excellent.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Very good. We have contacted Hunter approximately 6 times and every time has been a good experience. When we are ready to buy again we will look for a Hunter again.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any We bought it from Bowline Yachts, in Winnipeg Manitoba, and would recommend that broker to anyone in the region.
