Structural or complex improvements Nothing other than the custon radar arch.
The boat's best features Sail plan and livability , both below decks and in the cockpit.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The refrigeration system, Ad-Barb, replaced compressor twice. The mixing elbow on the engine became clogged and we were able to fix this with the help of the Hunter Owners Web response. Many stress cracks on the transom.
Sailing characterisitcs We left Porland Oregon July 28, 2001 and sailed to San Diego, Ca. We had pretty rough sease and strong winds up to 40K, Essence sailed very well to weather, comfortable ride. Out of San Francisco, we had following seas and winds in the 20-25K range with seas uncomfortable at 10ft ( )swells, but the boat performed well, no stress on the rigging that we saw, no breakage. Of course in more favorable conditions, Essence sailed well down wind from San Diego to Cabo with a 2 day spinniker run. Our best sailing day was 134nm under sail, exceptional!
Motoring characterisitcs We run Essence about 2100 RPM, she seems happy here. We had bad diesel out of Cabo and had to change filters numerous times. We will only use a Baja filter now, experience is a great teacher. Overall, what little we motored, the engine performed well, no problems. After leaving Cabo, in five months wwe used 12gal. of diesel, yes, we have a sailboat and use it for that . . . Sailing!
Liveability Comfortable, great storage. The aft cabin is roomy with excellent ventilation, especially in the tropics. Having the walk around head area, opens up the boat and makes it feel larger. I wish we had a larger cockpit since we spend so much time outside entertaining. Possibly more outside locker space, but then do you ever have "enough"!!
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Informative, efficient and easily accessbible. We have purchased 3 Hunters, and because of the factory support we would purchase again.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Purchased 2 boats, a Hunter 28 and 37.5 from Signature Yachts in Seattle. Excellent brokerage, this dealer has integrity and excellent support. I would also now purchase another HUnter from the Sailing Life in Portland.
Other comments The best choice we could have made, overall dependability, livability and performance, the Hunter 37.5 excells in all areas!!
