Review of the Hunter 37.5 by Jim Makarauskas

Year built 1993
Location of boat Northport, Mi
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? Yes
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, we had an incredible summer onboard. It was more than we had hoped for.
Gear that's been added We've added safety equipment: handheld VHF, jacklines, inflatable.
Structural or complex improvements I hinged the front of the shelf over the galley sink in order to create a spot for a microwave that wouldn't have to be stowed when not in use.
The boat's best features Ample storage and interior space. The diesel powers the boat well and, under sail, the boat performs beautifully.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Both cockpit soundsytem speaker covers were broken when we bought the boat. The head leaks into the storage area under the adjacent sink.
Sailing characterisitcs Generally speaking we've found the boat to be well-balanced under sail and very efficient.
Motoring characterisitcs We've been very impressed by the power and reliability of our Yanmar diesel. It's been able to power through large seas and maintain good headway.
Liveability We (2 adults, 2 kids and a 95 lb. golden retriever) spent 10 weeks onboard with only a day and a half away. We had high hopes going into the summer, but didn't imagine we would enjoy the time so much. We had no desire to return home.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any We bought our boat from Torresen Marine in Muskegon, MI. They were fair and helpful before and after the sale. Every question and concern were answered and we took the boat back to them for winter storage.
Other comments This is our summer cottage on the water and we love it.
