Review of the Hunter 37.5 by Steve Zito

Year built 1994
Location of boat mobile, Alabama
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1996
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, I like it better than the newer models. I do not really like the "arch" models, particularly the bulky fiberglass ones. The steel arches look better. I have never sailed one, but perhaps the access to the main sheet is better. I also prefer the aluminum deck to hull rail around the perimeter. The newer ones have a large fiberglass projection there. I saw a boat badly damaged from a storm in a boat yard, where this fiberglas was really badly damaged.
Gear that's been added Refrigeration, autopilot, genoa, inverter, microwave. It came with A/C, wind, depth, speed.
Structural or complex improvements No, except that the bimini frame fouled the winch handle circular movement when the bimini was folded up. I put a slide track on the bimini frame attachment to the deck so I could slide it back when folded, out of the way.
The boat's best features Naturally fast. Able to adjust jib sheets from behind wheel, but not able to adjust main sheet Roomy and functional cabin. Shallow draft. Swim platform, removable seat, wheel, etc. Outside storage lockers.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I bought the tall rig, but the Intercoastal waterway bridges are only 50' tall in florida, so beyond Pensacola eastward, I have to go outside to get to Destin, etc.
Sailing characterisitcs Fast pointing in light air and moderate air. Easily overpowered in heavier air. Slow downwind in light air. I just cannot sail it fast into heavy air.
Motoring characterisitcs No problems, just prop walk.
Liveability Could not be better for the size
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Good, but very little dealings, bought boat used.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Good, came from dealer in Gulfport, MS, cannot remember the name, but do remember the Owner, Govert.
Other comments Somebody has to help me sail it faster.
