Single line reefing for the H216

posted 08-28-2009 by Ranger Paul

Picture 1 - The start of the reef line on the port side/sail leech. A snap shackle is attached to the boom permanently with an eye strap. The position of the eye strap is shown in a later picture. When installing the sail, the bowline knot in the reefing line is fed through the leech reefing cringle from the starboard side then attached to the snap shackle.

Picture 2 - The reefing line on the starboard side/sail leech goes through a block. The position of the block is shown in a later picture. I don’t remember where I got this block. It may have already been on the boom and I may have moved it to its current position.

Picture 3 - The reefing line using eye straps and fairleads to support the line until it reaches the mast.

Picture 4 - The starboard side block attached to the mast guiding the reefing line to the reefing crinkle on the luff of the sail.

Picture 6 – The port side of the luff of the sail with fairlead and clam cleat.

Picture 7 - Detail of the port side/sail leech/reefing crinkle when the sail is reefed. Note the eye strap/snap shackle is mounted such that it both pulls back and down at a 45-degree angle. This will keep both the leech and foot of the sail tight making the sail flat when reefed.

Picture 8 - Detail of reefing line on port side of the gooseneck when the sail is reefed. It probably would help to keep the reefing line clear of the spinnaker halyard! Oops!

Picture 9 - The sail when reefed. Note how flat it is. I don’t bother to gather up the loose sail at the foot. My reefing procedure is to 1) release the main sheet, 2) readjust the rigid vang so the boom can go up higher than normal (if you have a rope vang, simply release the vang), 3) lower the main to my “red” mark on the main halyard, 4) use my right hand to pull the reefing line forward on the starboard side of the boom while I use my left hand to pull down on the reefing line. Viola!
