H216 Jib Tang Replacement

posted 05-20-2009 by Ranger Paul

Based on reports of tangs breaking, I replaced my tang with a mast hound from West Marine and it was a sweet installation. The mast hound is the only one currently carried by West Marine and is 3” x 4.5”.

The first thing I did was squeeze it together a little and test fit it.

You can see that the curve is a little fat.

This pic shows that the legs are a little long. Of particular note is the position of the rivet hole near the centerline of the mast...it is just above the centerline.

This pic shows the mast hound modified. Straightening out the fat part of the curve brought the rivet hole that was near the centerline of the mast right to the centerline...almost like it was designed this way. A larger hole was drilled using the rivet hole as a guide and the extra length of the legs was cut off and shaped with a grinder.

This pic shows the final installation. Sweet!
